Emission (barrier) filters are a type of interference filters that are only permeable to rays of a certain wavelength. Emission filters separate from the emitted radiation the part of the spectrum that represents the desired signal, i.e. they pass only the rays emitted by the fluorophore, they keep out the excitation light.
